PANJWAII DISTRICT, Afghanistan - As many as 26 local Afghan men were executed by the Taliban yesterday and their headless bodies put on public display around a local village, in a morbid attempt to dissuade other civilians here from assisting NATO and Afghan national security forces operating in the area, coalition sources have told CanWest News Service.

CAIRO, Egypt: Imam utama Saudi Arabia di hari Jum'at mengumumkan bahwa kaum Muslim Shia di seluruh dunia adalah kafir yang dianggap lebih buruk daripada kaum Yahudi atau Kristen. Hal ini menunjukkan perpecahan yang semakin meningkat di Timur Tengah.
Abdul Rahman al-Barak, adalah salah satu dari imam2 Wahhabi terkemuka di Saudi Arabia dan dianggap dekat dengan keluarga kerajaan Saudi. Dia mengajak warga Muslim Sunni di seluruh dunia untuk tidak bergabung dengan warga Shia. Aliran Wahhabi Islam Sunni yang diikuti di Saudi Arabia adalah aliran Islam kolot dan menganggap Islam Shia sebagai bid'ah.
"Secare luas, kaum yang menolak (Shia) adalah aliran yang paling sesat dan mereka punya semua sifat2 kafir," tulis Abdul Rahman dalam sebuah fatwa atau keputusan agama yang ditayangkan di websitenya di hari Jum'at.

DETROIT -- Muslim leaders say a spate of vandalism over the weekend involving stores owned by local Iraqis could stem from brewing sectarian Islamic tension over the execution of Saddam Hussein.
While Shi'a and Sunni Muslims are fighting in Iraq, the two groups generally get along in Metro Detroit and the United States. But Muslim and Arab leaders say the hanging of Saddam, and especially the timing of the execution, spurred hard feelings.
They say the vandalized property was owned or operated by people of Iraqi descent who are Shi'a.
The tension that concerns Muslim leaders was spurred by the timing of the execution, according to Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations and other community leaders.
Saddam was ordered hanged by the Shi'a controlled government of Iraq on the morning Sunnis began celebrating Eid al-Adha, the holiest of Islamic festivals. Most Shi'a did not begin to celebrate until the following day.
While Shi'a Iraqis took to the streets of Dearborn to celebrate, many other Muslims viewed the timing of the execution as an insult. Realizing the tension in the local community, some clergymen were considering meeting this week to take action.
Shattered glass remained inside a cardboard box outside of Alkhafaji's store on Warren Avenue Monday. Next door, the window of the Al-Akhasi restaurant was boarded up -- it, too, had been smashed. A person called the restaurant earlier that day and made a threat that an incident would occur.

At least three people were killed and dozens injured as the two camps battled each other around street barricades with stone-throwing and in some cases gunfire. Black smoke poured into the sky over Beirut from burning roadblocks.
The fighting quickly took on a dangerous sectarian tone in a country whose divided communities fought a bloody 1975-1990 civil war. Gunmen from neighboring districts in the northern city of Tripoli — one largely Sunni Muslim, the other largely Alawites, a Shiite Muslim offshoot — fought each other, causing two of the fatalities.
The day gave a frightening glimpse of how quickly the confrontation between Saniora's government and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies could spiral out of control, enflame tensions among Sunnis, Shiites and Christians and throw Lebanon into deeper turmoil.

NALCHIK, Russia (AP) - Unidentified gunmen opened fire Wednesday on a car carrying the chief Muslim leader in Ingushetia, seriously wounding the mufti and his son, according to police in the violence-plagued southern Russian region adjacent to Chechnya.
The mufti of Ingushetia, Isa Khamkhoyev, was riding in a car driven by his son when it came under fire from automatic weapons, Ingush Interior Ministry spokesman Nazir Yevloyev said.
Yevloyev said Khamkhoyev's son was in critical condition. There were no other witnesses to the attack, and the assailants fled, he said.
Ingushetia has been plagued by attacks by militants, often targeting officers and facilities of law enforcement or the government. As a mainstream Muslim leader, the mufti could possibly have been perceived as a target by Islamic extremists.
Ingushetia is just west of Chechnya, the site of two wars pitting government forces against separatist rebels since 1994, and Ingush militants have joined Chechen rebels in attacks, including the 2004 hostage-taking raid on a school in Beslan, in neighboring North Ossetia, that led to 334 deaths.

Youths 'massacred' in Aceh village
Shocked villagers told of the seven boys and men being shot
Fresh details have been emerging of alleged executions by Indonesian troops fighting separatist rebels in Aceh.

Military chiefs have denied the allegations, saying that civilians are never targeted. They asked the victims to stand in front of the rice fields and then they killed them one by one, said a Mapa Mamplam villager
Indonesian warships have been shelling rebel positions, as the military continues its offensive against the Free Aceh Movement (Gam), which began on Monday after peace talks broke down.
The villagers at Mapa Mamplam said a group of seven boys and men, aged between 12 and 20, were sleeping in a hut near a prawn farm to guard it - standard practice in rural areas.
A group of Indonesian soldiers entered the hut and dragged the boys out, lining them up on one of the dykes dividing the ponds, they said.
A witness, who had a clear view of the events, told our correspondent that some of the group were then shot one by one at close range.
Three or four others were then told to run, before being shot in the back, the villager said.
In his first visit to the village, our correspondent saw four bodies with bullet wounds to the back of the head.
The military said on Friday it had killed 38 rebels since Monday. Rebels said 12 of their fighters had been killed, along with 53 civilians.
Human rights workers say almost 10,000 people have fled their homes since the fighting started.
Major-General Endang Suwarya, the commander overseeing Indonesia's campaign in the strife-torn province, has insisted: "Absolutely no civilians were killed.

Youths 'massacred' in Aceh village
Shocked villagers told of the seven boys and men being shot
Fresh details have been emerging of alleged executions by Indonesian troops fighting separatist rebels in Aceh.

Military chiefs have denied the allegations, saying that civilians are never targeted. They asked the victims to stand in front of the rice fields and then they killed them one by one, said a Mapa Mamplam villager
Indonesian warships have been shelling rebel positions, as the military continues its offensive against the Free Aceh Movement (Gam), which began on Monday after peace talks broke down.
The villagers at Mapa Mamplam said a group of seven boys and men, aged between 12 and 20, were sleeping in a hut near a prawn farm to guard it - standard practice in rural areas.
A group of Indonesian soldiers entered the hut and dragged the boys out, lining them up on one of the dykes dividing the ponds, they said.
A witness, who had a clear view of the events, told our correspondent that some of the group were then shot one by one at close range.
Three or four others were then told to run, before being shot in the back, the villager said.
In his first visit to the village, our correspondent saw four bodies with bullet wounds to the back of the head.
The military said on Friday it had killed 38 rebels since Monday. Rebels said 12 of their fighters had been killed, along with 53 civilians.
Human rights workers say almost 10,000 people have fled their homes since the fighting started.
Major-General Endang Suwarya, the commander overseeing Indonesia's campaign in the strife-torn province, has insisted: "Absolutely no civilians were killed.

On Wednesday morning, four gunmen calmly ate breakfast at a food stand outside the courthouse in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis as they lay in wait for Bassam al-Fara, 30, a judge at the Islamic court, witnesses said.
When al-Fara, who belongs to the largest clan in Khan Younis, emerged from a taxi, three men grabbed him and forced him to his knees, while the fourth shot him, the witnesses said. The attack left his body and the sidewalk riddled with bullet holes. The witnesses declined to be identified, fearing for their safety.
