LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- Suspected members of a radical Islamist sect killed a state television cameraman in northern Nigeria, a union group said Sunday.
Two gunmen trailed lhaji Zakariya Isa from his home in Maiduguri and shot him a short distance away, said Shuaidu Usman Leman of the National Union of Journalism.
Isa worked for Nigeria's National Television.
The attackers are members of the radical Boko Haram sect, according to Leman.
"We don't know the motive," Leman said. "We could not place his killing with his recent work."
Leman said an investigation is under way and the union is working to protect its journalists.
Boko Haram" translates loosely as "Western education is forbidden/sinful."
The group holds all government authority in contempt and wants to establish a Sharia state in northern Nigeria.
Authorities have blamed the group for shootings and bombings around Maiduguri.
