God patiently waited for me
I was born on a salt covered island, MADURA (East Java). My family was poor. From a spiritual or religious viewpoint I would probably be classified as a non-observant Muslim (abangan) who neither really followed the religion nor was interested in it.

However as a Maduran, even though I wasn’t too strict in regards to religion, from the viewpoint of identity Islam was identical to my lifestyle. Islam could not be divorced from my lifestyle, even though I really did not care about its teachings or practices or anything that had the flavor of spirituality.

My interest in spiritual things only emerged after I experienced a sickness that brought me to my deathbed. I know that God is the God of all patience. He waited for me and certainly waits for all those who want to listen to His call. The patience of God was very real to me on one occasion (in 1989) when I experienced terrible pain in my stomach. I had never before experienced such excruciating pain. A lump as big as an apple was in the lower left side of my stomach.
