Of converts and hypocrites

Situations similar to the M Moorthy case have been present for ages and it is high time clear-cut rules and regulations are established. I would like to recount a situation I faced when I was an officer at the Selangor Religious Deparment (Jais).

A Chinese man living in Pulau Ketam had died and was buried in Klang according to Chinese rites by his family. I was called in and asked to accompany an officer of the department to exhume the body and give it Muslim rites. I refused to do so. Based on the Quran, I was of the view that an investigation was required to determine whether this man had truly embraced Islam and was a practising Muslim.

From what I knew, he was not a practicing Muslim but had converted for material gain. On visiting him once, I observed he had a Chinese ancestral altar in his home. This man had in fact tried to revert his decision of having embraced Islam, most probably due to his lack of success in attaining his goals.

This was a clear-cut case of hypocrisy and such is well defined in the Quran. During the Prophet's lifetime, he had to contend with Abdullah bin Ubaid, a Jew, who on seeing his ambitions to become the chief of Medina embraced Islam, with the hope of achieving his goal.

When he died, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) led the prayer, only to receive revelation from Allah that praying for such people would be fruitless.

This shows us there is a need to define the state and situation of a convert to Islam, and only after having determined that the state reach a decision as to whether he observed Islam faithfully (ritualistically) or was false to it, in the sense that he or she continued to observe their previous religious faiths, and that they were mere opportunists to Islam.

Only when these facts are proved should it be determined whether a person should be buried according to Islamic rites. Burying him just because of a piece of paper means nothing to Allah if he was unfaithful to the faith.

If we want to do that, then we should make it clear in the constitution that once a person embraces Islam, he is considered a Muslim regardless of what he does later. This is to prevent abuse of the good name of Islam. To date none of these sensitive issues have been address and until they are addressed, society will live in confusion and unhappiness.

As a convert and a loyal subject of Islam, I must say in fairness that people in general should take heed that crossing certain boundaries can lead to dire consequences, so keep your distance, and be sincere in your actions.
